Miscellany
It's starting to get cold in San Luis Obispo, which makes me a little sad. The dip in temperature signals a welcome shift in seasons however, with its attendant promise of old traditions and assembling families.
And maybe we don't need to say goodbye to summer just yet.
Helle Jorgensen's art celebrates the softly weathered flotsam of warm days by the seaside. This is yarn at its happiest, gently coaxed into forms that work for this medium, their muted coloring suggestive of the effects of lengthy wear.
Among the collection of lovely things on her site are a few pencil drawings (one is at the bottom of this page), and to truly appreciate these one should first visit with her sketches. She is also at work on The Rubbish Vortex, with a non-wool medium: balls of yarn twisted from plastic bags. In her own words: "...going off on tangents helps me resolve stumbling blocks because I think laterally and make connections I wouldn't make otherwise." Helle has studied biology, worked in scientific research for many years, retrained as a horticulturist, and then became an artist.
Hers is an inspired body of work, and I only wish that we were all as fortunate in our own lateral travels.

And after a long day at the beach ...
