Chicago-based artist Elisabeth Doherty's medium is colored yarn, which she painstakingly crochets into exquisite little dolls, or, amigurumi. Amigurumi seem to be the wide-eyed children of the internet: big-headed, soft bodied, knitted/crocheted little anthropomorphized animals, fast multiplying in blogs, DIY forums and stores all over the web (Elisabeth attributes her own start in fashioning amigurumi to craftster.org, the parent of DIY forums).
On first seeing her work what is quickly evident is her mastery of the craft coupled with an incredible attention to detail (disclaimer: I own one, bought in the lucky days when Elisabeth accepted commissions). But beyond hooking the right spirals and knots is the wicked personality which she infuses into each colorful doll, personalities that seem to begin in the birthing process, growing as the doll is formed. Elisabeth has started posting her sketches on her Flickr site and it's instructive to see the various stages of development (she has also just written a how-to book).

And after all that work, a brilliant coda: just look at Euclid6's clothing above.
