A plate a week

Plate

I've been busy filling an order for a very nice lady in a Northern California store, details for which will be posted in the next weeks at aplateaweek.com, where all of them are being collected. I now have 9 new plates drying, and four more about to go in the kiln for round two. Yesterday, a couple of new molds arrived, and they are HUGE. 14.5 whole inches across. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but they're not going back (she says with a grin).

It's been an interesting week. Tom and Hannah are away till tomorrow, Sunday, so I've had room to step back and think. The process of creating a handmade piece is a satisfying, contemplative one, and it shouldn't be hurried along. In pottery, so many things can go wrong: Tools can be dropped in the wrong place, tired hands lead to gouges which need filling. And sometimes the right tools aren't handy in the short window that clay allows. Last night I spent 20 minutes looking for the perfect piece of string. I didn't find it but I now know exactly what it needs to look like.

It's 6am on Saturday morning, the house is an unbelievable mess, I found some milk for coffee, and every bird in the neighborhood has taken up residence on our street. I love weekends.
