We've hit a groove, where I shape clay around a paper core into lemon-shaped balls which Hannah then finishes. Early on, she'd lightly knead and push the clay into the form she wanted, but as the birds multiplied, she's been content to just fashion heads and tails, sometimes not even bothering to form the rear. She's developed a preoccupation with their heads, and has been happily working with her accidents, where for instance, a fold of clay would suggest a beak, or a twist determines the direction in which the head points. I hope they all make it through stage one firing since she's done really delicate work on some of the heads. And I think this week will see the end of this series for a while, unless Hannah gets a new lease on the project when she sees them glazed in every color we can find in the studio.
