A new series

Over the years I've built a small collection of old wooden type, which I'm using on plates that I make, assembling various letters and punctuation marks to make lone words which read as though they have been plucked from a larger context, sort of like random snippets of conversation. And because they've been pressed into plates, there seems to be an association with food. But much of it is accidental: I build words with the letters available to me. And some of it I'm sure is driven by Hannah, who, without warning, has become the pickiest eater. In this and other things seven-year-olds are certifiably insane. How else to explain the sudden insistence that different foods not be allowed proximity: Pasta can't touch vegetables. Meat can't overlap either of those. And milk simply cannot be brought to the table before the very last mouthful has been swallowed or it will so NOT be cold enough. (Hmm, that last one may actually make sense.)

However, my glaze trials have somewhat dampened my enthusiasm for the project, and now about 4 of these are not fit for much of anything. So I'm moving away from soaking them in color, and I think clear glaze is next. Color glazes seem to soften the letters too much, to the point that sections of the forms get obliterated, which will happen with glazing. Better to remove color and have the glaze mantle be transparent. It's unrealistic, but I'd love to be able to retain the soft concrete greyness of unfired clay.

I'm also at work on a bird series, and hopefully I'll do a better job of marrying idea to medium.

Portrait of mom with puffball And red eyes. This is a fairly stupid observation to make, but Hannah's style varies with whatever material she's using.

Great likeness: Her friend Jenea told her to hurry up and lose the other tooth since she could then show her how to squirt water through the holes.
