Effortless thank-you cards

Even at 7 she's too darn busy to sit still long enough to write out thank you cards. Yet Missy has no trouble whatsoever diving neck-deep into birthday loot, so it's important that she does them.

A happy compromise: Simple cards printed on letter-size paper, that Hannah drew all the parts for, and which she'll finish by signing her name and writing the names of her friends. She also applied marker-color to some of the little hearts. We've done these before on colored paper, but this year I'd like to get them out the door while we're still in 2008, so they're staying printer-paper-white. One important tip: Don't wait till the last minute to ask for a drawing for the front of the card. Just use whatever you have stashed away, or get them to do it weeks in advance when they're happy about drawing.

Guess what I saw in the mirror: Hilarious attempt at a self portrait for a school project, due this week.

Dog (and rooster): I discovered yesterday that there's a term for Mrs. Johnson's winning formula: Directed Drawing, where the teacher draws along with the class and demonstrates every step.
